Congratulations on finishing your metal braces or Invisalign® treatment journey! You’ve put in the work, and now it’s time for the best part: keeping those results for life. Think of your retainer as your "smile insurance." It’s the final, vital step to make sure your teeth don't try to sneak back to where they used to be.
At Lilli Orthodontics, we make protecting your investment easy and comfortable. Whether you want something you can pop in and out or something hidden that stays put, Dr. Lilli has the perfect solution for you.
Why Do I Need To Wear A Retainer?
After your orthodontic treatment ends, your teeth need a little reminder to stay in their new spots while the bone and gums settle around them. Without a retainer, teeth have a natural tendency to shift.
Wearing your retainer as directed ensures your smile stays straight, healthy, and exactly how you like it. Most people wear them full-time for a short while, then switch to just wearing them at night.
Which Retainer Is Right For Me?
We offer several custom-made options designed for your comfort and lifestyle. We’ll help you pick the one that feels best:
Vivera™ and Essix Retainers: The "Invisible" Choice
These are made of smooth, clear plastic that fits snugly over your teeth. Vivera retainers look a lot like Invisalign® clear aligners! They are nearly invisible, easy to remove for eating, and very durable.
Hawley Retainers: The Classic Choice
These use a thin, adjustable wire and a durable acrylic base. They are time-tested, easy to clean, and come in fun colors if you want to show off your style.
Permanent (Bonded) Retainers: The "Set-and-Forget" Choice
A lingual bonded retainer is a tiny, thin wire placed behind your teeth where nobody can see it. It stays there permanently, so you never have to worry about forgetting to wear it. We often pair this with a clear removable retainer for extra nighttime support.
Never Worry About a Lost Retainer Again
We know life happens. Retainers can get lost, broken, or chewed by the family dog. But don’t sweat it. That’s why we created our Retainers for Life program.
When you join, you get your first set plus unlimited replacements for just a small copay. This program can save you over $1,200 compared to buying them one-by-one. It’s the ultimate way to keep your smile safe without the stress.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many hours a day should I wear my retainer?
Every smile is different. Generally, we recommend wearing your removable retainer for 20–22 hours a day right after treatment, eventually moving to "nighttime for a lifetime." Dr. Lilli will create a custom plan just for you.
How do I clean my retainer?
For clear retainers, a gentle brush with cool water and mild soap works great. For Hawley retainers, you can use a toothbrush and toothpaste. Just remember: keep them away from hot water so they don't lose their shape.
What should I do if my retainer feels tight?
If your retainer feels tight, it’s usually a sign that your teeth have tried to move. Wear it more consistently for a few days to guide them back! If it truly doesn't fit or is broken, call us right away and we’ll get it sorted out.
